Breaking conservation easements in Sonoma County?

The Sonoma County Open Space District has apparently reached an agreement that would break a recently purchased conservation easement agreement in exchange for getting a trail through land that is already supposed to be protected.

While the case is clouded by legal issues and the public would receive some benefit in the form of a trail, breaking a new conservation easement sets a terrible precedent that the Open Space District can't afford. The District will have to go before voters in the next couple of years to get their funding re-authorized. If they can't show that they are good stewards of the public's land and money they will have a difficult time convincing voters that they are worth it.
