Don't make it easy to sell Michigan Parkland

Defense of Place's LuAnne Kozma and Dave Dempsey had a response to an editorial in the Detroit News calling for fast tracking of parkland sales. Their response: selling land that nobody sees as parks is fine, but don't create a process to dispose of public assets without public oversight.

Researching the title history should never be overlooked

In Alameda, California, a local citizen critical of a land deal to sell a railway right of way to developers came up with some interesting information from the title to the property: the City of Alameda had an option on the property to buy it for $30,000 that could never expire. (Even though the land is now worth tens of millions.) As expected, all parties are now in court.

DOP's LuAnne Kozma in the Detroit News

Defense of Place's LuAnne Kozma was quoted in yesterday's Detroit News expressing her deep concerns with Michigan DNR's land consolidation policy. This policy is putting parkland on the block and threatening areas that often should be protected.
