What's New: Action AlertsNovember 5, 2008 Don't stand by and let the Army Corps of Engineers and the Oklahoma Tourism Department sell Oklahoma's public recreation areas and state parks to private developers. If we don't act, hugely popular public use areas like Lake Texoma State Park will soon be converted into high end resort developments and essentially shut off to the public! Sales of Corps owned recreational lands are encouraged by the Oklahoma Demonstration Lake project, a provision of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2007. Originally promoted as a boon to local economies and recreation, it is really about the privatization - some call it theft - of our public park lands. Developers are getting our valuable public waterfront land at bargain basement prices using questionable procedures. They can then turn around and sell the new lake lots and upscale residences at huge profits. The last time these kinds of sales were authorized by WRDA (1999), public lands around Hugo Lake and Lake Texoma were sold by the Corps at a fraction of their true value. Now elected officials involved in these sales are the focus of an ongoing federal investigation in Oklahoma. Don't let this happen again! The federal legislation and political pressure highly encourages the Corps to implement this economic development plan on 23 flood control lakes in Oklahoma. We need to stop this radical program from being expanded nationwide in the upcoming WRDA 2009 legislation. ACT NOW: Write and Call the following U. S. Senators: Write and Call: Senator Barbara Boxer, Chair of the Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works, and Senator James Inhofe, the committee minority leader. Tell them: The Corps is selling public lands while ignoring the National Environmental Policy Act, and the Land and Water Conservation Act of 1965. Their actions betray the public trust. Ask the Senators to investigate and hold hearings on the Oklahoma Demonstration Lakes project and to stop funding this federal program which threatens our Corps recreation areas and state parks. U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer U.S. Senator James Inhofe Letters and phone calls are more effective than e-mail. Please e-mail a copy of your letter to FLTSP (defendlaketexoma@gmail.com).
